“A Prolegomenon to Any Planning for the Future”

“Marx predicted a time at which the capitalist economic system would collapse. So far, at least, he has not been proved right. However, it would now seem likely that the system will collapse – and sooner rather than later – but for reasons that were not on Marx’s agenda: essentially ecological ones, such as global warming. And if such a collapse comes, it is liable to be much more catastrophic than anything Marx envisaged. In the light of this, how should we plan for the future?”
Graham Priest is Boyce Gibson Professor at the University of Melbourne, and Arche Professorial Fellow at the University of St Andrews (Scotland). He is well known for his controversial work on logic and metaphysics. His books include “In Contradiction”, “Beyond the Limits of Thought”, and “Towards Non-Being”.
This second Brian Medlin Memorial Lecture is part of a series presented in memory of Professor Brian Medlin, founding Professor of Philosophy at Flinders University.
Presented under the auspices of the Department of Philosophy, Flinders University and the Faculty of Education, Humanities, Law & Theology.
