Critical Times

This year Australia will host the largest ever joint military exercise — Operation Talisman Sabre. Nearly 14,000 US personnel and over 13,000 Australian military personnel will participate. This will be the start of a new era of Australia’s unwavering support for, and subordination to the US military. After these “war games” the USA will set up a permanent training facility on Australian soil.

During Talisman Sabre, the US and Australian military are going to attack a piece of pristine coastline at Shoalwater Bay near Rockhampton — indiscriminately killing flora and fauna of both land and sea.

US warships — most like carrying depleted uranium weapons and possibly carrying nuclear weapon — will sail inside the endangered Great Barrier Reef Marine National Park.

The Peace Convergence is a non-violent gathering in the Shoalwater region on 18 to 24 June 2007. The peak period of the Convergence will be on the weekend: Friday 22 June to Sunday 24 June.

An invitation is extended to peace and social justice, environment, indigenous, women’s, secular and faith based groups and individuals to join with the local community:

To non-violently oppose the war games and the environmental destruction it will cause;

To voice our call for an end to the war in Iraq, and Australian involvement with illegal and unjust US-led wars.
