“Friends Do Not Forget”

Hear why the Mary MacKillop East Timor Mission will nominate
the nation of Timor-Leste for the award of
Companion of the Order of Australia (Honorary)

The Mary MacKillop East Timor Mission has called for the recognition of the unique contribution of the Timorese people to Australian soldiers during World War II. Over 40,000 Timorese died, yet there has been no adequate official recognition of their role in assisting Australia in this war. “This omission must be amended” says Sister Susan. “The practical measures many Australians are taking to assist the Timorese to overcome the effects of their recent history must be accompanied by a clear statement of our World War 2 debt to them.” [For more about Mary MacKillop East Timor Mission visit their website – www.mmiets.org.au ]

Special Guest:
Abel Gutteres
Consul General for Timor Leste

During the period of Indonesia’s brutal occupation of East Timor, Abel represented the CNRT (Council of National Timorese Resistance) in Australia and New Zealand and headed the East Timor Relief Association. Since 2002 he has represented the new nation of Timor-Leste as Consul General in Australia. He will soon move to a new role. The Australia East Timor Friendship Association takes this opportunity to celebrate with Abel the achievements of the Timorese people, and to toast his contribution before bidding him a fond farewell.
