The Rudd Government’s proposed 40% tax on the super profits of the giant multinational and local mining monopolies should be supported.
It has thrown the spotlight on the critical question of who owns Australia’s rich natural resources and the massive profits created by workers’ labour in the mining and transport of these non-renewable resources. It begs questions of how taxes on national resources should be used and how the country should deal with the foreign dominated mining industry.

The Liberal Party launched its official vote-buying election campaign with the promise of another $34 billion in income tax cuts over the next three years. These are in addition to the income tax cuts announced in the 2007 and 2006 federal budgets and the superannuation and allocated pension tax cuts that commenced on July 1, 2007. This brings the total tax cuts to more than $100 billion in just five years.

The May budget provisions for tax cuts, family allowances and some other matters came into effect on 1 July, providing an opportune time to briefly go over the issues and learn a little more about what is in store for the Australian people.
Taken together, there will be no dramatic changes brought about by the budget itself.
